Genetic Counselor Training Course

Genetic Counselor Training Course

As the implementation of genetic medicine in clinical practice has been progressing in recent years, including insurance coverage of genomic medicine, new types of prenatal diagnosis, and diagnosis of hereditary rare diseases, the shortage of genetic counselors has become an issue in the northern Kanto region, where our university is located. Our genetic counselor training course was established in 2021 with the aim of further enhancing genetic medicine not only in this region but also throughout Japan.

Curriculum

In 2021, our training course started primarily for paramedical staff at our hospitals. For this reason, the course is offered as a graduate school for working students, and lectures are conducted mainly via an online learning system. In addition, students participate in genetic counseling practice by arranging practice time slots with their respective work hours. Counseling role-plays and other exercises are scheduled before and after genetic counseling or after work hours. From 2022, we also accept working graduate students from other institutions.

Accreditation of Master’s Degree Completion

Credits are awarded for lectures based on attendance and examinations, and for practical training based on attendance, conference discussions, genetic counseling records, and others. Requirements for completion of the master’s program include enrollment for at least two years, acquisition of at least 30 credits, and passing a master’s thesis review and final examination. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take an examination for the Japanese Certified Genetic Counselor.
