I have been leading the Division of Cardiovascular and Genetic Research since 2023. Our division was established in 2004, and under the leadership of the first professor, Sadahiko Iwamoto, we have been conducting research to contribute to local patient care and welfare in line with the founding spirit of our university. In particular, Jichi Children’s Medical Center Tochigi provides highly specialized care for many children with rare congenital diseases from Tochigi and other prefectures. Genetic diagnosis of such children has been one of the main tasks of our research division. We will continue to carry out our mission and devote ourselves to further development.
As the term “$1000 genome” became popular some time ago, the development and rapid cost reduction of next-generation sequencing have made it not as difficult as it used to be to find out how the genetic information of an individual differs from that of others. However, it is still difficult to identify which of the many genetic differences that individual patients have are related to disease. This cannot yet be solved by next-generation sequencers and computers alone. In addition to the analysis of genetic information, experiments using cells and animals are essential. This is why we “do whatever is necessary from genetic analysis to mouse experiments.”
My mentor said, “To know the disease, you must know the normal.” Many physicians engaged in both research and patient care tend to focus only on the study of disease. However, the pathology of many diseases is complex, and often cannot be understood without understanding normal biological phenomena. We guide young researchers so that they can grasp the essence of life phenomena from a long-term perspective, rather than focusing on disease only.
Furthermore, even cutting-edge research is meaningless if it is not communicated to physicians in their daily clinical work. I am currently a member of the Japanese Society of Cardiology’s committee for “Guidelines for Genetic Testing and Genetic Counseling in Cardiovascular Disease.” The ultimate goal of our laboratory is to treat and prevent diseases and promote the health of patients, so we will actively promote such external activities as well.

Associate Professor and Genetics Team Leader
Ayumi Matsumoto
I am a pediatrician and my research focuses on clinical genetics. I am aiming to connect clinical and basic research and contribute to patients and society as much as possible. I am also in charge of the genetic counselor training course. Every day I am inspired by the motivation of veteran nurses, midwives, and paramedical staff as we learn together. Together with genetic counselors, my goal is to create a society where prejudice against genetic disorders is eliminated and those who wish to be tested can receive the benefits. Our Genetic Counselor Training Course is still in its infancy, but we invite you to join us and learn with us.

Lecturer and Cardiovascular Team Leader
Yasutomi Higashikuni
I am a physician-scientist in cardiology. Advances in science and technology are establishing minimally invasive treatments for ischemic heart disease and valvular heart disease. However, there is still no cure for structural and functional disorders of the heart (heart failure). Aging is also a cause of heart failure. My goal is to develop a treatment for heart failure. To achieve this goal, I am engaged in two research projects: one is to identify therapeutic targets for heart failure, and the other is to develop new technologies for gene and cell therapy that enable autonomous self-repair of the heart. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in the development of therapies that will open the way to the future.

Assistant professor
Hidetoshi Tsuda
I have been engaged in research as a postdoctoral fellow in a variety of agricultural and medical institutes and universities, and working in the current lab since 2020. My research has focused on dermatology-related fields for a long time. I collect information on good Japanese sake and whiskey as much or more than information on research.

Ph.D. student
Tumurbaatar Suvd
Graduated from the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, and joined our lab in 2024. Working on genetic analysis of pediatric congenital diseases.

Researcher
Kota Shibayama
I am an undergraduate student in Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering at Teikyo University. I joined Matsumura Lab in October, 2024. I have a wide variety of research experiences on nucleotides, proteins, drugs and foods in microorganism, plant and animal experiments. In this lab, I have been learning the cutting-edge technologies and techniques in genetics and cardiovascular medicine. I am enjoying the research projects that decipher the essential mechanisms of diseases. In the future, I’d like to expand my research into drug development and discovery.
My hobby is Karaoke.
